As many concerts, sporting and cultural events are cancelled across France this week, Avignon has taken the decision to cancel certain events that were schedules to take place in municipal halls and communal places.

The festival Millevin, 'la fête des côtes-du-Rhône primeurs' that was due to take place on Thursday 19th November has been cancelled.

"It is not a question for me to give in to fear, to stop living and give up our ideal of freedom ... However, less than a week after these terrible attacks, it would be inappropriate to that a festive event [...] can proceed normally. This difficult decision, I took primarily thinking of the victims and their families, to show our support and our compassion," said Cécile Helle, Mayor of Avignon.

As a precaution, the Mayor has also announced that it has reinforced the police presence around schools, and in addition, any extra-curricular activities will remain confined to school grounds until the end of the week.

Finally, there should be increased vigilance in places of public gatherings, such as shopping centres and entrances to public buildings. The City has also decided to temporarily close the Campo Bello gardens, Carmelites and Petramale, others will see their closure brought to the earlier time of 17:00.
