Hotel de Ville, Aix-en-Provence

The town hall for Aix with a nice square, fountain and granary

featured in Sights & sites

The town hall or 'Hotel de Ville' in Aix en Provence originally dates back to the fourteenth century, with two subsequent building phases taking place in 1655 and 1678.

The building, attached to a large clock tower, houses the portraits of many Counts of Provence and Kings of France.

The fountain in the square outside was built in 1755 and is topped with a Roman column. It acts as the centrepiece to the square where many people come to the market or just to watch the world go by.

The granary is a large and imposing building which was built in 1754 and has a large triangular-framed carving depicting a man and a woman who signify the Durance and Rhone rivers and the benefits of their life giving waters.

The square is home to a few cafes and restaurants making it a nice spot to stop off for a coffee or a bite to eat.

Visitor comments

  • "As all public buildings, they occupy prime locations! The Hôtel de Ville in Aix, a building in the classical style of the middle of the 17th century, looks onto a picturesque square. It contains some fine woodwork and tapestries. Also on the Place de l'Hôtel de Ville is the former Corn Exchange. This ornately decorated 18th-century building was designed by the Vallon brothers." - Trip Advisor
  • "Great to visit here on a Saturday while the flower market is on. Beautiful architecture in a superb town square location. Sip a drink in a cafe & admire the view!"- Trip Advisor
  • "I visited this Hotel de Ville with a friend who is living in Aix, so she absolutely guided me here where she showed me the beautiful yard and the stones and also the statue in the entrance stairs. it was closed so we didn't go inside the building, but even in the outside I found it interesting as it is government office building." - Trip Advisor
