Cat Cafe opens in Avignon

A unique concept with 28 cats in residence

Cat cafés have been popping up all over the world in the last year or two and this year one opened in the centre of Avignon, but with a twist - these cats are up for adoption.

"La Compagnie Des Chats" has been open since May 2016 and works closely with the SPA animal shelter, to give people the chance to enjoy the company of the cats in their cafe, but also to showcase the cats to prospective new owners.

There are currently 28 cats in residence, enjoying the shelving around the walls to walk around or sleep on, crossing bridges and cuddling customers. Each one is looking for a new home, although the café managers realise that not everyone will want to, or will be able to adopt one.

They set up the concept earlier in the year with a crowdfunding appeal, after they realised that there were a lot of adult cats left behind in the shelter once all the kittens had been re-homed. At the beginning it proved hugely popular, especially over the main holiday period, but at the moment mid week numbers are a little patchy and they need to be able to keep running the business.

If you want to show them some support for the great work they're doing, pop in on your next visit and you never know, if you fall in love with one of the resident cats, you may end up coming back from your holiday with a little more than a souvenir...
