With the Easter holidays fast approaching and a couple of public holidays to enjoy, a trip to Provence this April could be just what you need.

Now that the days are getting longer and warmer (the average temperature in Provence in April is around 18 degrees C) it's a great time to explore the markets and villages of Provence, before the blazing heat of summer sets in.

Here's a look at what's on in Provence this month, with our pick of events, tours, music, theatre and things to do.

L'Isle sur la Sorgue Farmers' Market

Markets

In every corner of Provence you'll find farmers markets and stalls selling local artists goods and crafts. There are indoor markets, street markets and flower markets.. in Avignon, Arles and Aix you'll find some of the biggest selection of markets. Avignon also has a colourful flower market every Saturday and three days of artists demonstrations at the European craft days event. This starts on 30th March and finishes on 2nd April.

The artists market starts in Isle sur la Sorgue this Saturday 1st April or you could head out to explore the various markets in Vaison la Romaine, Cadenet, Pernes les Fontaines, Cucuron or Apt to name a few.

Music

The Easter Festival in Aix en Provence takes place over 2 weeks from 10th April and promises some of the best classical music in different venues across the city. In Avignon at the Grand Opera, you can enjoy a symphony concert on the 7th April by the regional orchestra of Provence with Chloe Hanslip on violin.

The Organa Festival opens with its first date of the season on 16th April, in St Remy de Provence. Flute et Flute play Baroque fantasies and sonatas at the Opera Grand Avignon on 23rd April. AJMI Jazz have several events on this month in Avignon, head to their website to find out which venues they will be playing at and when. Fans of World music should head down to Vence near the Riviera for the Nuits du Sud Festival.

Art Exhibitions

In Aix en Provence, April sees the start of the Rencontres du 9e Art which takes place over two months and brings together graphic artists and authors from around the world. Festo Pitcho in Avignon celebrates the start of Spring with a parade of marionettes and fun for all the family.

There are just two more months left to see the exhibition of Robert Combas' work at the Collection Lambert in Avignon, or head to Les Baux for the start of the new season at the Carrieres de Lumieres which this year, features work by Bosch, Brueghel and Arcimboldo.

Theatre

Macbeth will be at the Avignon Grand Opera on Sunday 2nd and Tuesday 4th April, followed by Fiddler on the Roof on 8th and 9th April. Find more theatres in Provence and search for more performances via their websites.

Guided Tours

Take a tour with an English speaking guide around the Palais des Papes, with a glass of wine included in the cost of your ticket.

Easter

The Feria d'Arles starts on 14th April and officially marks the start of the new 'bullfighting' season although most people go to celebrate Easter and join in the parades, concerts and dancing.

Wine Tasting

On 8th and 9th April Chateauneuf du Pape host Les Printemps weekend of wine tasting with over 85 wine makers available to talk to and learn from.
