Parts of the Alpes-Maritimes Devasted by Wild Fire

Huge fires have blazed across the area since last week

The most recent fire that devastated areas around the Saint-Vallier-de-Thiey area, just north west of Cannes and Grasse, destroyed more than 120 hectares of forest.

After the evacuation of 10,000 people from campsites in Frejus at the weekend the entire area has been on high alert for more forest fires. High winds, lack of rain and the recent heatwave have been to blame for many fires igniting in dry areas of forest.

The fire in Saint-Vallier-de-Thiey started on Wednesday and although it was brought under control by the evening, it was reignited by strong wings and spread throughout Thursday. The main area has now been contained and has been extinguished, however there are small pockets of flames remaining and the authorities have called for extra vigilance from residents.

The entire region remains on alert for wildfires with the Esterel in the Var and the hinterland of Grasse in the Alpes-Maritimes at particular risk.
