Carpentras

The synagogue of Carpentras is the oldest synagogue still in activity in France.

In 1343 the bishop of the city, Hughes, nephew of Pope Clement VI granted to the Jews of Carpentras the right to build a synagogue. The construction of the synagogue began in 1367.

The Pope also conceded the right to purchase land for a cemetery in 1343 apparently "in return of an annual fee of six pounds of spices, ginger and pepper, or the cash value."

Saint Siffrein Cathedral, Carpentras

2. Saint Siffrein Cathedral, Carpentras

Location
Carpentras

Pope Benedict XIII ordered the reconstruction of this building after the original Romanesque church collapsed, in 1404.

The exterior has lots of finely carved arches, gargolyes and features such as the infamous 'ball rats' that you can spot as you wander around.

The main building that you can see today took around 115 years to complete, with successive architects adding on Gothic vaults, ribs, and high stained glass windows.

Inside you'll find painted panels and ironwork, fine altar pieces, marble sculptures and holy relics.
