Chateau du Barroux, Carpentras

12th century castle perched on the dizzy heights of Les Barroux

featured in Sights & sites

A wonderful castle to explore in the heart of the Vaucluse department, offering wonderful views over the surrounding areas.

It was once the seat of the lordship between the twelfth to the fifteenth century, belonged successively to the families of Baux, Budos to Ricavi, Peyre, Cardaillac, of Rovigliasc, Pelletier Gigondas and Noret. In 1538, in order to settle a debt, it became the property of Henri Rovigliasc, Earl of Veynes. He transformed the castle into an uninhabitable military fortress.

And that is merely the beginning of a long long history for this castel. Since 1993, the Association of Friends of the Castle of Barroux have been continuing restoration work with the support of the family Vayson Pradenne, to whom the castle still belongs. Even though everything is not yet complete, the castle can now welcome visitors and also offers a splendid setting to various cultural and artistic events.
