Chateau St Saturnin Les Apt

Medieval castle ruins & 17th century windmills

featured in Sights & sites

Built on a rocky bluff at 400 metres above sea level is the remains of a Medieval fortress which offers great views of the surrounding Vaucluse and Alpilles mountains.

Starting in the village, you take a short walk up to cobbled streets to the ruins. The old walls and windows take you back in time to 1056 when this place was originally inhabited.

A dam holding water for supplying the village below is still visible and holds a large volume of water to this day.

Fountains and wash areas can be found around the site and if you're in the area on a Tuesday morning you can visit the market where local producers bring their fruits, flowers and vegetables to sell.

Visitor comments

  • "The 10 minute walk up to the vieux chateau is well worth the effort. Take a picnic lunch or drinks and snacks for an early evening apéro. Views of the village, Calavon valley across to the petit and grand Luberon is spectacular. Extend your walk by visiting the 'barrage' below the castle and the moulin nearby. " - Trip Advisor
  • "Beautiful chateau with stunning views of the surrounding area. Well worth the climb. There are two routes to the top and possibly the right hand staircase is the easier climb." - Trip Advisor
  • "Chateau ruins which the children loved exploring, there were two goats there sleeping in the sun among the ruins. Fantastic views from the top of the surrounding countryside, unfortunately the church at the top was locked. One word of warning the treck up is quite uneven and there are some steep drops so children do have to be supervised." - Trip Advisor
