La Scourtinerie, Nyons

Traditional mat-making museum - the only one of its kind in France

featured in Sights & sites

Originally founded in 1882, this family run business making traditional Scourtins survives to this day.

As well as being a museum you can visit the workshops where they make the mats and also buy some of the products in the shop.

They have a wheel loom from 1892 in the middle of the room with old tools and models for you to look at.

Formerly used as mats in the oil pressing process, the grandfather of the family realised that people could use them as floor mats and so a new product and new life was breathed into them.

Free entry.

  • "This is a great bit of local heritage as you can wander around and discover how the weaving has been done through generations of one family" - Trip Advisor
  • "A family business continuing to produce wonderful mats using old engineering methods probably not found anywhere else in France. You can watch a demonstration upstairs and downstairs there is a great video and exhibits explaining all the story. All this is free but you can leave a tip in the box (no one brings your attention to it). At ground level you can buy the mats they make plus other local crafts." - Trip Advisor
  • "Lovely and joyful environment where you can visit and buy homemade products made from coconut fibers and more than 100 years old machine.
