2016 Vaucluse cherry harvest begins
2 month long harvest of Monts de Venasque cherries or 'red diamonds' started this week
Tuesday saw the start of the official cherry picking season in Venasque.
The much celebrated fruit, known to local farmers as 'red diamonds,' is one of the products of the region that bears the label "Savourez le Vaucluse" thanks to its exceptional quality. Other include the Muscat grape and strawberries from Carpentras.
In 2013 the orchards from this area produced a whopping 7472 tonnes of cherry!
Harvesting this year's crop is expected to take 2 months in total, and on 5th June you can come along and taste, tour the orchards and take home some cherries from this years Festival de la Cerise in Venasque.
