La Vuelta is a Spanish road cycling race, one of the biggest in Europe, akin to the Tour de France in terms of its size and the top cyclists in the world that it attracts.

2017 sees the 72nd edition of this iconic race and for the third time in its history, the start takes place outside of Spain. This year's start point will be in Nimes in western Provence.

The race starts on 19th August and around 220 riders will go on to cover a total distance of ~3,300 kilometres split into 21 stages, including 8 hill and 5 mountain stages. After Nimes, a second French stage will be undertaken before the riders enter Spain and press on towards the finish in Madrid. The race finishes on 10th September.

Such a large event needs lots of staff and volunteers to make it run smoothly and in Nimes they're in need of around 300 volunteers. The start of the race will see competitors battle it out in a 13.8km time trial starting from the Roman Arena in Nimes and duties will include manning the barriers that separate the riders from the public along the race route.

If you'd like to apply you'll need to register on the Nimes mairie website, under the section called "Devenez bénévole pour la Vuelta" you'll find the registration form to download. Otherwise come along to the event to watch, it's a must-see for any cycling fans.
