Baptistry, Venasque

The Baptistery is one of the oldest buildings in France

featured in Sights & sites

Once connected to the cathedral by a semicircular vaulted corridor, the baptistery is a beautiful building situated in the narrow streets of Venasque.

The baptistery was part of the first list of classified monuments in 1840. It was rebuilt in the eleventh, twelfth and thirteenth centuries, and restored in the nineteenth century by the Historic Monuments.

Visitor comments

  • "Venasque is a charming little village, a Provence town at its best, especially if you can avoid the tourist season. The town church is interesting, but who can guess that behind it there is an ordinary door to what seems to be an ordinary house but it takes you to the entrance of the old baptistery." - Trip Advisor
  • "This Baptistere was originally a Pagan temple so this for me was incredibly fascinating .It is worth while taking the written history notes" - Trip Advisor
  • "The main church and the Baptistere are well worth visiting and you should also take time to sit by the cafe by the fountain to enjoy a refreshing drink" - Trip Advisor
