Aroma Plantes lavender farm & distillery, Sault

1. Aroma Plantes lavender farm & distillery, Sault

This 80 hectare farm and distillery was originally created in 1978 and now welcomes visitors from around the world.

Guided visits to the distillery are free, as is access to the fields, discovery paths, gallery, Aromatic’bar and shop. Guided tours take place every hour.

Lavender soap-making workshops are also available for 12 euros per person and Lavender spindle making workshops for 8 euros per person.

2. Fort St Andre & Abbaye St Andre, Villeneuve les Avignon

The 14th century Fort St Andre was built by order of the King of France, Philippe le Bel as a mean to keep an eye on the papal city of Avignon. Perched on a hill, this impressive structure contains the ruins of the Abbaye St Andre.

There are beautiful gardens inside the Abbey with terraces, rosebeds and a pergola. The views of the Rhone Valley and Avignon are spectacular. The Fort is open to the public throughout the year for a small fee.

3. Lavender farm & conservation garden, Sault

The lavender collection is certified by French National Conservatory for specialist plant collections, and is located on family land on the Route du Mont Ventoux, near the village.

In order to discover the many aspects of the lavender plant, the lavender farm offers the public various publications and activities that cater to both individuals and professionals.

You can learn how to cultivate your own lavender, or just explore the plants growing on the farm.

There is a farm shop on site where you can buy bouquets, various products made from lavender, scents and oils, candles and incense burners, as well as lots of books on the plant.

Commanderie de Peyrassol, Le Cannet

4. Commanderie de Peyrassol, Flassans sur Issole

Acquired in 2001 the Commanderie de Peyrassol, an old Knights Templar staging post, is now one of the outstanding vineyards of Provence. Its reds, whites and rosés are to be found in the finest dining establishments in France and throughout the world.

Located around the grounds is a large collection of modern art sculptures from a range of International artists.

Guest dining at the Commanderie de Peyrassol allows visitors to take a gourmet break on a sunlit terrace at the heart of a square formed by the various buildings of the domaine. It offers cuisine with a distinctly Provençal flavour, accompanied by our own wines. Our chef Guillaume Delaune will welcome you with a different menu each day, based on his own inspiration and the produce in season. Table d’hôte dining is offered from Easter until mid-October.

You can also stay in their guest accommodation for a weekend to really explore the site.

Visiting dates and times are as follows:

Winter (16 October – 14 April):

Our cellar is open from 09.00 until 18.00 Monday to Friday and from 10.00 until 18.00 on Saturdays. Closed on Sunday.

Summer (15 April – 15 October):

Our cellar is open seven days a week from 09.00 until 19.00.

Visits to the wine storehouses are organised every day at 11.00, 14.30 and 17.00. A wine tasting rounds off this gastronomic and educational tour.

5. Pavillion Vendome

A 17th century 'pleasure palace', this fine mansion conatins collections of 17th & 18th century Provencal furniture and portraits. It is set in wonderful formal French-style gardens.

Built on the orders of Louis Mercoeur Duke of Vendôme to house his passionate love affair with Lucretia de Forbin Solliès called "Belle of Canet." Surrounded by a magnificent French garden, the main facade is superimposed the three classical orders and is decorated with unique Baroque Atlanteans, garlands of fruit and a mask that would, they say, the features of the Belle of Canet.
The collections consist of many portraits of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and Provencal furniture. Since 1990, the Pavillon has hosted many modern and contemporary art exhibitions. Guided tours are available, and the garden is open to the public all year.

Terrain des Peintres, Aix-en-Provence

6. Terrain des Peintres

Located on the outskirts of Aix, not far from the Atelier Cezanne is the Terrain des Peintres.

It has been preserved as a public space thanks to its amazing views of the Montagne Sainte Victoire and that artist Paul Cézanne often painted here in the latter part of his life.

You can walk up the path to a view point that overlooks the surrounding countryside and mountains and take a look a reproductions of famous paintings that were created here, a little like an open air museum.

For those who want to extend the walk, it is possible to reach the Oppidum d'Entremont, located about 1 km, through the path Chemin de la Marguerite.

The Oppidum d'Entremont is one of the most beautiful pre-Roman settlement in Provence, which sheltered a Salyens community, Celto-Ligurians who had settled here before the Romans arrived.

Jardin de la Fontaine, Nimes

7. Jardin de la Fontaine, Nimes

Noted to be the first European public garden, it consists of two landscaped areas: a classic garden of the seventeenth century and a Mediterranean garden landscape style.

The garden itself was started in 1745 at the request of Louis XV, the then King of France. Since then, many spaces have been created to enrich the area, such as the rock garden, mix of rocks and Mediterranean plants, the Montgolfier pool with aquatic plants, Mazet garden.

8. Rocher des Doms

Located in the heart of Avignon, these wonderful gardens provide great views over the city and a place to escape for an hour or two of peace and quiet. With a pond, fountain and swans, and lush vegetaion it is a charming place to unwind.

There is a picnic spot, restaurant and playground area for children.

9. Jas de Bouffan

Aix-en-Provence

Paul Cezanne's father bought this 18th century country mansion in 1859 and created a studio for his son in the attics.

Cezanne was prolific in his compositions whilst here and some of his best loved painting were completed here.

In 1994, the last owner, André Corsy, sold the property to the City, subject to usufruct, with the exception of the farm. Since late 2002, the mansion and park, classified historic monument, are property of the City of Aix-en-Provence.

In the large oval room on the ground floor Cézanne painted directly on the walls between 1860 and 1870, 12 large spare compositions from 1912. Since May 2006, a multimedia design shows on the walls the works of Cézanne.

Only guided tours are available (at specific times in English) so check with the tourist office and book in advance.

10. Hotel de Ville

The town hall or 'Hotel de Ville' in Aix en Provence originally dates back to the fourteenth century, with two subsequent building phases taking place in 1655 and 1678.

The building, attached to a large clock tower, houses the portraits of many Counts of Provence and Kings of France.

The fountain in the square outside was built in 1755 and is topped with a Roman column. It acts as the centrepiece to the square where many people come to the market or just to watch the world go by.

The granary is a large and imposing building which was built in 1754 and has a large triangular-framed carving depicting a man and a woman who signify the Durance and Rhone rivers and the benefits of their life giving waters.

The square is home to a few cafes and restaurants making it a nice spot to stop off for a coffee or a bite to eat.

Le jardin d’ete, Arles

11. Le jardin d’ete

Located close to the Medieval walls in Arles, this garden has been in use since 1840.

It covers 10,000 square metres with fountains, places to sit and a playground for children.

It's open from 1st April to 30th September each year, from 07:00 to 20:30 and 1st October to 31st March from 07:00 to 18:30.

12. Chateau de Sauvan, Luberon

This is an impressive 18th century mansion with beautiful gardens that allows visitors a chance to explore elegant rooms decorated in the style of the time. Th gardens contain ponds with swans and ducks, peacocks, lavender fields and terraces. The chateau also produces its own honey courtesy of 25 bee hives.

3 euros entry but if you want a guided tour its a little more. Ask on arrival.
