Fondation Vasarely, Aix-en-Provence

Abstract art & architecture from the Hungarian artist

featured in Sights & sites

Hungarian artist Victor Vasarely established this foundation in 1966 with the aim of promoting 'art for all' where art blends beautifully with architecture in the 'city of tomorrow'.

The building is constructed from 14 hexagons in black and white, making it a most distinctive building. Inside you'll find colourful installations featuring abstract works that challenge the visitor with optical illusions and unusual perspectives.

There are guided tours for individuals and groups and workshops and activities for school children throughout the year.

Worth knowing

Although recognized as a charity in 1971, the Foundation is completely private and revenues mainly from inputs and sales of its store space.

Since 1981, the architectural center, has been the subject of maintenance which, unfortunately, has contributed to a slow deterioration of the building works.
A major restoration project was launched in 2010, supported by the Ministry of Culture and local authorities in the context of a classification Historic Monument, remarkable heritage of the twentieth century.
