MuCEM, Marseille

France's first national museum outside of Paris

featured in Sights & sites

This museum (Musée des civilisations de l’Europe et de la Méditerranée — MuCEM) showcases civilisations in the Mediterranean in the twenty first century, and has been developed by the French Ministry of Culture and Communication.

Designed by the Khoury Project, the building is a work of art in itself and it links with the neighbouring Fort Saint-Jean by a foot bridge.

The museum opened in June 2013 with over 30,000m2 of space to explore with 5,000m2 of exhibitions. It seeks to show visitors the Mediterranean as a starting point for creating a shared history, promoting dialogue between societies, increasing awareness of current phenomena, and creating a new public space.

There will be 4 temporary exhibitions held here every year looking at the places and people who shape the Mediterranean, with items on display from some of the most renowned French and foregin museums.

The muCEM is open every day except Tuesday from 11am to 7pm in summer and 11am to 6pm in winter, with late opening on Fridays until 10pm.
