Eglise St Trophime

Church of St Trophime - a beautiful Romanesque church in the heart of Arles

featured in Sights & Sites

Built sometime in the twelfth century this beautifully carved and carefully constructed church is a stunning sight in Arles. Named after an early bishop of Arles the stone carvings, statues and intricate details represent the Roman Provencal style of architecture.

Located at the Place de La Republique, large statues of apostles and saints are situated either side of the church entrance making it an intimidating but fascinating structure which has been restored and maintained over the years. Stone sculptures of chained souls being taken to hell and others of those being taken to the saints indicate a trend of the 'final judgement'. The interior of the church is less detailed with a cool dark atmosphere yet with some interesting artwork to browse over.

Through the church you can enter the Cloisters of St Trophime which are in need of some restoration. The galleries were built over 2 different centuries with the north and east galleries showing the 12th century Romanesque influence and the south and west galleries showing the 14th century Gothic architecture.
