The ruins of Fort de Buoux lie on top of hill at the head of the Apt valley. This defensive stronghold was used to protect the surrounding towns and land from Lourmarin to Silvergues and the ruins you see today date from the 13th century.
Louis XIV ordered its decommission in the 17th century and it has only recently started the process of restoration. Currently, three boundary walls stand, and there are ruins of a small village and the church. Best of all is the view from the top, although you should beware of the cliffs! The fort is accessed up a footpath, about 15 minutes from the car park, and there is a small entry fee.
