La Citadelle, Sisteron

An impressive cliff top citadel overlooking the town of Sisteron

featured in Sights & sites

Sisteron's citadel wouldn't look out of place in an episode of Game of Thrones, with its imposing high walls, fortifications and impressive location looking down over the town below.

It's listed as a historical monument and dates back to the thirteenth century. More additions to the original structure were made in the 16th century and again in the mid 19th century.

Sadly it was heavily bombed during WWII, but has since been lovingly restored to its present day glory.

Allow around 2 hours for a visit. It costs around 6-7 euros for entry.

Guided tours are available on request at the tourist office.

Visitor comments

  • "Have visited the citadel both times I've been to Sisteron. There are wonderful views to be had over the beautiful river Durance. Lots of history to be learnt " - Trip Advisor
  • "Interesting location and history of the place and the momentum , the volume of construction orders not to miss her holiday plans, exploring Provence . They climbed to the highest point of the citadel - prize - great views." - Trip Advisor
  • "We last visited the Citadel in April, when the north wind was gusting to about 55 km per hour. We were a bit surprised that the Citadel was still open, but the walkway along the top has waist-high walls, so seems reasonably safe, though it was a bit difficult to stand still. The only part we did not dare to go to was the final few metres to the look-out above the river, though we had possibly an even better view down to the bridge and the fantastic cliff beyond it, from the bastion below.
