The French Grand Prix returned to the Circuit Paul Ricard near Le Castellet in the Var region of Provence after a 10-year hiatus. English driver Lewis Hamilton took home the prize, arriving just before Max Verstappen and Kimi Räikkönen.

It was a celebratory competition for the French as the country regained its Grand Prix after it ceased in 2008. One of the oldest motor races in the world and the oldest Grand Prix, it was first run in 1906. This year, the chosen venue was the Circuit Paul Ricard near Marseille, a track opened in 1970 that hosted its last French Grand Prix in 1990.

The race wasn't without controversy as Sebastian Vettel crashed with Valtteri Bottas and was given a 5-second penalty. The sanction seemed too little for Hamilton who said: "When someone destroys your race through their error, and they get a tap on the hand and are then allowed to come back and finish ahead of the person they took out, it does not weigh up".

Hamilton has risen to the first place on the leaderboard thanks to his win. Congratulations!
