Chateau de la Barben, the rather impressive medieval castle situated between Aix and Salon de Provence, has been put up for sale with Sotheby's.

The chateau is Provence's oldest and is certainly one of the most impressive in the region, with its towering fortifications and beautifully manicured gardens, set within 307 hectares of land.

The first mention of the chateau in historical records was in 1064 and as such, the buildings and grounds are rich with history, making it an incredibly popular place for visitors.

Chateau de la Barben is over 1000 years old and was previously the home of King Rene during the 15th century. It was later owned by the same family, family de Forbin, for around 500 years.

The 10,000m2 gardens have been designed by André Le Nôtre.

The chateau lies with 307 hectares of land which includes a large game park and has two rivers passing through ti which are great for fishing. The size of the land lends itself to developing a vineyard.

The castle and outbuildings have a total surface area of 5,182m2.

The guardian of the chateau has an apartment within the grounds and there is also a studio apartment in the watchtower.

The chateau is just 20 minutes from Aix-en-Provence city centre and 30 minutes from the airport or TGV train station.

The castle is currently open for tours as well as for bed and breakfast guests, but if a short visit such as this isn't enough for you and you've always dreamed of owning your own castle, then you could be the next one to add your own touches to this unique property.

The asking price is in the region of €15 million.
