Winter is releasing its grip on Provence and spring is on its way. At this time of year there's still plenty going on, especially in the main cities of Avignon and Aix-en-Provence.

Here is a quick rundown of our top picks of things to see and do in Provence this March.

Music

Performances will be taking place at the Opera Grand Avignon all month, including a piano recital by Bertrand Chamayuo on 14th March, Rossini's Una Voce Poco Fa performed by Marie-Nicole Lemieux on 15th March and a symphony concert by the Avignon-Provence orchestra on 17th March.

AJMI Jazz Club have three dates for performances, on 1st, 3rd and 8th March. For more jazz head to Jazz aux Vents at the Theatre des Vents in Avignon on 19th March.

Theatre Chene Noir have a Cabaret Flamenco on 17th March and at Le Rouge Gorge you can enjoy a night dedicated to some of the best female disco singers on 25th March.

Classical music lovers should head to the Chapelle Saint-Louis in Avignon on 18th March or to Saint Agricol church for organ recitals on 21st March.

Nuits du Sud, a festival or world music starts on 30th March down in Vence near the Riviera. It's a major event for live music, DJ's and performers from around the world.

Performing Arts

Mercredis sous la Lune return to the Theatre de l'Oulle in Avignon with a dance performance on 15th March. At the Theatre des Doms Les Francophoniques will be playing for three nights from 15th to 18th March.

Theatre du Chene Noir in Avignon will be showing an adaptation of Don Quixote on 9th, 11th and 12th March.

Gladiator school at Arles Arena

Cultural

Arles Arena gladiator school starts again this month on the 4th March. Take part or just come along and enjoy the spectacle.

The Fete du Cheval takes place in Calas, just south of Aix from 15th March for three days. The town of Pertuis hosts to the 5th annual food and wine fair from 10th to 12th March.

On 17th March you can enjoy a drive-in screening of Mad Max Fury Road which takes places as part of the Recontres Cinematographiques du Sud event, in Villeneuve les Avignon.

Art

The new Carrieres de Lumieres exhibit at Les Baux-de-Provence, featuring work by Bosch, Brueghel and Arcimboldo runs all month and in fact for the rest of the year.

In Avignon, an exhibition of work by artist Robert Combas will be on all month at the Collection Lambert.

The Marilyn Monroe photo exhibition in Aix en Provence runs through March and April.

Avignon Motor Festival

Best of the rest

The 15th Avignon Motor Festival will be taking place over 3 days from 24th March.

Festo Pitcho starts on the 25th March in Avignon, with theatre performances, marionettes, music, dance, storytelling and poetry.
