Climate Change Threatens Provence Lavender & Olive Fields

Changes in temperature and precipitation affect traditional crops

When thinking of Provence's countryside, everyone visualises large areas of beautiful rolling hills coloured in lavender or filled with old olive groves. This picture-perfect landscape is now threatened by climate change.

Warmer temperatures and different precipitation patterns mean that fungi, diseases and pests are putting Provence mythical lavender and olive trees at risk. Even oak trees, vital for the area's famous truffles, might grow slower due to climate change.

Local farmers are doing everything they can to stop the process, but if things continue as they are now these crops will need to migrate to northern regions in order to survive, a move that will change the image of Provence forever. Hopefully new measures taken by international governments will help avoid this gloomy future!
