The ancient site of Les Alyscamps, a Roman and medieval cemetery near the centre of Arles, was the setting of Gucci's 2019 Cruise Collection fashion show last Wednesday. The UNESCO World Heritage Site created the perfect backdrop to Alessandro Michele's dreamlike creations.

Gucci creative director's Baroque designs matched the mysterious setting perfectly, made even more theatrical by scheduling the presentation at night and surrounding the models with smoke and church candles. Michele's creations featured references to local history including some of Arles ancient names, 'Galula Roma' and 'Urbs Genesii', as well as verses by Dante who was inspired by Les Alyscamps when writing the 'Divine Comedy'.

Alessandro Michele said that he chose Arles because "I have always been a great admirer and a curious and avid traveller of that part of the South of France, which I visit at least once every year. I actually decided to have this year’s cruise show here last year, when I was in Arles for a long weekend in July,”

Among the 400 guests were Irish actress Saorsie Ronan, Hollywood star Salma Hayek, American rapper A$AP Rocky and legendary designer Christian Lacroix, who was born in Arles. Watch the full fashion show in the video below.
