Chateau Gigognan Vineyard, Sorgues

Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Côtes du Rhône vineyards in a beautiful estate

featured in Vineyards & estates Updated

Located in one of the driest areas of the Rhône Valley, the vineyards benefit from over 2,800 hours of sunshine per year. The Châteauneuf-du-Pape vineyard is a single plot of 25 hectares with several other plots nearby, while the Côtes du Rhône vineyard is situated in a small valley. Grape varieties are Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Roussane and Viognier, due to the particularities of the climatic and geologic conditions.

At the heart of the Rhône Valley, the château was a fiefdom which formed a principality with Châteauneuf du Pape and Bédarrides, governed by the archbishops of Avignon. During the 17th and 18th century, the administration of Gigognan was entrusted to Lords from Provence.

Since 1996, the castle knows a true rebirth thanks to Jacques Callet. Having been completely renovated, it was given back the charm of the great manors of Provence. In 2012, a new team of expert professionals is brought together. They have also converted to organic agriculture, receiving the Ecocert certification in 2010.

The complex includes a Bed & Breakfast. The cellar, where they sell their wine, is open from Monday to Saturday, 9:00-18:00. To visit, contact them in advance; they organise two tours with tasting sessions per day, at 10:00 and 17:00 on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
