Domaine de La Citadelle, Menerbes

Corkscrew museum & vineyard all in one near Menerbes

featured in Vineyards & estates Updated

The beautiful vineyards of the Domaine de La Citadelle was created in 1989 when Yves Rousset- Rouard renovated an old farmhouse with 8 hectares of vineyards at the foot of Ménerbes.

Le Domaine de La Citadelle has become well established in the Rhone valley. Alexis joined his father in 1995 and now occupies 39 hectares of vineyards in the appellation IGP Luberon and Vaucluse.

In addition to the vineyard the estate also houses a rather unusual museum and private collection of corkscrews. The first corkscrew appeared around the mid 17th century, most probably an English invention. It was at this time that the English actually began to keep their wines bottled rather than in barrels.

With the industrial era, the shape of the glass bottle changed: the change was from the so-called "onion-bulb" to the cylindrical form we know today. At the same time, the bottle neck became narrower, and the cork was invented to ensure a perfect seal. A plug extractor or "corkscrew" has since then become indispensable.

Worth knowing

You can enjoy a degustation (tasting) of the wine after your tour of the museum and maybe take a few bottles home with you.
