Apt Cathedral

Cathedrale Sainte-Anne in the centre of the Luberon

featured in Sights & sites

This cathedral, also known as Sainte Anne d'Apt, is believed to be built on the site where Saint Auspice was buried.

Saint Auspice was martyred at the end of the third century and the first church built on the site was in the fifth century, only to be destroyed 300 years later by the Saracens.

The current cathedral started to be built in the 11th century and has had many additions and renovations over the years. During the Revolution the cathedral was vandalised, re-opening again in 1801.

Inside are two crypts where you will find niches containing the relics of Saint Auspice, Saint Martian, St. Castor and Sainte Anne. There are numerous Roman stelae with Latin inscriptions, a Romanesque style sanctuary and saracophagi from the 13th century.

Visitor comments

  • "Nice little place. It mixes all kind of style but remains mostly roman. the crypt is even more little but is a very restful place. If you pass by, just take the 10 minutes to visit it. It you are visiting the Saturday morning market, you will be happy to refresh yourself on this restful place." - Trip Advisor
