Provence is the top region in France for fruit and vegetables, growing over half of the nations produce.

Pretty much everything can be grown in the favourable climate, but the top products are the orchards of apples, pears, peaches, cherries, figs, apricots & plums. Melons and fruits of the forest are also grown abundantly. Top rated vegetables include all sorts of lettuce, tomatoes, aubergine (eggplant), courgette (zucchini), bell peppers, pumpkin, plus a wide selection of herbs.

In fact Thyme is an iconic product of the Provence region, although it should be noted that it is different from the so-called "soft" or gardeners thyme. Provencal Thyme now has protected status, which ensures that only thyme grown using traditional methods in designated areas of Provence can be sold under the name.

More specialised produce such as asparagus and chestnuts are grown and even have their own festivals.

If you'd like to learn more about the fruit and vegetables grown in Provence, you might want to schedule in a visit to Epicuium near Avignon - a centre with exhibitions, gardens, greenhouses, and a year round programme of cookery & gardening workshops.
