You can feel like you've stepped back in time when you visit Vaison la Romaine. As the name suggests, this was an important town for the Romans, who liked its location and climate, and built many rather magnificent structures. Vaison became a federated city under the Romans which explains why so many public buildings were constructed.

This church lies at the centre of what was the old Medieval village of Vaison la Romaine. It was built in the 11th century over the remains of early Christian buildings.

The present building is from the 18th century, however there has been a structure here from as early as the 13th century.

This river gorge runs for around 30 kilometres from the small village of Saint Leger, heading west along the borders of the Vaucluse and Drome regions.

This lovely medieval castle has its origins as far back as the 11th century when the original fortress was built. It was transformed into a luxurious residence during the Renaissance before being somewhat deconstructed in the Revolution.

Nyons is mainly famous for being the most northerly olive growing region in Europe. Sheltered as it is by its location in the Eygues Valley, it is blessed with many days of sunshine, mild winters and hot summers.

Vaison la Romaine has it all, Roman ruins, a historic and delightful medieval town centre, a castle on a rock, arts festivals, wonderful vineyards and glorious countryside for hiking and biking.

Buis les Baronnies is a sleepy little place surrounded by fertile land that produces lavender, olives, apricots and limes.

Visan is a tiny village in the Vaucluse, to the north east of Orange and on the border of the Drome.

A sweet village sitting in the Dentelles de Montmirail hills just to the south of Vaison la Romaine. The medieval lanes are full of cobbled squares, winding steps, and ancient stone mansions.

The home of AOC Rasteau wines, the village of Rasteau is tiny and can be covered quite easily in an hour's walk.
