Mormoiron, Provence

A pretty little village in the foothills of Mont Ventoux

featured in Towns & villages Updated

Mormoiron is a small rural village in the north of the Vaucluse region well known for its vineyards, cherry and olive oil production.

Nestled on a small hill, the village has lots of tiny winding streets and paths for you to wander around, where you'll find the small parish church and great views of the surrounding countryside.

History & Culture in [locality]

The history of the village dates back to the stone age with evidence of human occupation around 100,000 year ago.

Thanks to some 6th century pottery that was unearthed here, the village is known to have traded with the Phoencians, and there have been traces of Roman cremations and funerary goods found here too.

In the middle ages and during the Wars of Religion (1562-98) the village walls were rebuilt to help protect it. You can still see the 16th century Porte du Brochier and the 17th century Porte de la Bonne Font as you wander the streets.

Events in [locality]

Grape harvesting takes place at Château Pesquié from mid-September to mid-October each year and you can take part for half a day at the Château Pesquié, or just come and enjoy the view of farmers and workers busy in the fields.

In fact the château is open for tasting and sales all year round, as is their vineyard trail. They also offer winemaker picnics, guided tours and tasting workshops, all of which need booking in advance of your visit, but are well worth it.

There are a small number of restaurants and cafés here as you'd expect in such a small village. Stop for lunch, dine in the evening or some even let you takeaway.
